The production of any content for television, film and online providers requires the skill and dedication of many people. An average film or television production may involve as many as 150 to 200 crew members at any given time. Each one has a specific and important job. This class will help navigate you through the world of production, which includes lighting, grip and camera.
Not everything will be covered in this class. As you will discover, this industry is as much about creativity behind the camera as it is in front of the camera. Most of the tools you will use in your daily career as a grip, lighting technician or production assistant were born out of specific needs. Existing equipment was modified to meet this specific need and a new “tool” would be born.
It is easy to get caught up in the “glamour” and excitement of working on a movie or a film. The glamour will quickly fade as you work your fourth 12-hour day in a row. This work is difficult. It is not easy by any stretch of the imagination. It requires a dedication, discipline and work ethic that determine whether you make it or not. This industry works as much or more by word-of-mouth than any other. The bottom line is: If you do your job and you do it well, you will work. If you don’t, you’ll watch the TV show or film from the comfort of your home.
This program is designed to give you the basic tools needed to work as a grip, lighting tech or production assistant on a film or television series. You are encouraged to ask questions. “Why would you do it this way and not that way?” “What’s the purpose of this tool?”
